Since 2012, the International Cycling Safety Conference (ICSC) has served as a forum for scientists, policymakers, and other cycling experts engaged in scientific and practical activities aimed at improving cycling safety. This conference provides opportunities for exchanging ideas and discussions, allowing participants to reconnect with old friends and meet new collaborators. Over the years, hundreds of contributions have addressed new research challenges and presented innovative practical solutions dedicated to enhancing cycling safety.
The International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS) hosted the International Cycling Safety Conference 2024 from November 5th to 7th , with approximately 180 representatives from over 20 countries and regions participating. Attendees cycled through Imabari City and the Shimanami Kaido, experienced workshops on bicycle safety education for children, infrastructure connecting autonomous vehicles and bicycles and cycling safety research. They interacted with others who have a professional interest in cycling safety, learning from each other and sharing knowledge. Detailed abstracts of all presenters are included in the abstract collection. Additionally, the special issue of ICSC2024, “Exploring Cycling Safety Culture,” is accepting full paper submissions of all accepted abstracts until January 31, 2025.
We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all the partners of ICSC2024. The IATSS was able to host this first conference held in Asia thanks to the cooperation of the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the National Police Agency, Ehime Prefecture, Imabari City, the Japan Society of Traffic Psychology, the Japan Society of Traffic Engineers, the Japan Bicycle Promotion Institute, and the Bicycle Utilization Promotion Study Group.
Furthermore, we congratulate Dr. Kevin Gildea (Lund University, Sweden) for winning the Best Presentation Award and Ms. Yuki Sakanoue (Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau, Otaru Development and Construction Department, Road Planning Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) for winning the Best Poster Award.
After nearly a year of hard work and preparation, it is time to pass the baton to the organizers of the next conference. ICSC2025 will be held in Oslo, Norway, from November 4th to 6th, hosted by the Institute of Transport Economics (Transportøkonomics institute, TĂI).”
